From Grades 6 to 10 (ages 11 to 15), children follow a curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) that is designed to support their transition from Lower School.

As they take on board new academic concepts, students are encouraged to develop their critical enquiry skills and extend their ability to draw connections between subject areas. Teaching is also focused on the development of intercultural awareness and effective communication to help our young people prepare for the challenges of high school and beyond.

The Programme Model

Subjects studied as part of the IB MYP include:

  • Language and literature (English)
  • Language acquisition (French or Spanish)
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences (incorporating all scientific disciplines)
  • Individuals and societies (incorporating History and Geography)
  • Arts (drama, music and the visual arts)
  • Design (incorporating product and digital design)
  • Physical and health education

Further study areas:

  • Wellbeing Studies
Applicable to all students as part of an advisory programme, with Grade 9 & 10 students also completing a course of study skills in this area.
  • Service as Action
An integral part of the curriculum, students will complete an Advisory Service Project each year as well as participating in service activities on an individual basis.
  • Personal Project
Students in Grade 10 will complete a project in their final year, applying what they have learnt in the context of a globally significant topic of interest.

Qualifications

At the end of Grade 10, students will look to achieve the IB MYP Certificate, an internationally recognized celebration of achievement that can support university admissions.

Being awarded the certificate is dependent on successful completion of a two-hour examination in eight subjects. Students must also undertake interdisciplinary learning and submit ePortfolios in language acquisition and either design, arts or physical and health education. They will also complete an externally moderated personal project and meet learning objectives for service as action.

Language Acquisition

From a choice of French, Spanish or Arabic, students in Middle School have the opportunity to follow a language acquisition pathway according to their levels of proficiency and interest. These are:

  • Emergent (beginner)
  • Capable (intermediate)
  • Proficient (advanced)
