Choosing between the IB Diploma and the American High School Diploma is one of the biggest decisions a family makes in high school. Most schools in Doha offer only one route. At ACS International School Doha we offer both, because no single qualification suits every student.
In Grades 11 and 12, our students work towards either the IB Diploma or the American High School Diploma. Universities around the world recognize both. The difference lies in how students learn, how they are assessed, and how much choice they have.
What is the IB Diploma?
The IB Diploma is a two-year program consisting of six subjects (three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level). The subjects are a language, a second language, a science, math, a humanities subject, and an arts or additional subject, so students keep a broad education right through to the end of school.
On top of that, there are three core components. Theory of Knowledge requires students to question how we know what we know. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research essay on a topic of their choice. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) involves students doing projects outside the classroom. Final grades are based primarily on external exams at the end of Grade 12 and are scored out of 45.
It’s ideal for students who enjoy the academic rigor of a broad range of subjects, like writing and debating, and can cope with a demanding workload.
What is the American High School Diploma?
The American High School Diploma is credit-based. Students earn credits course by course from Grade 9 to Grade 12, and their grades form their GPA (grade point average). Assessment is ongoing, so it’s not all down to final exams. Classwork, projects and tests throughout the year all count.
It offers more flexibility to focus on the subjects where a student is strongest or most interested. It’s ideal for students who do their best work steadily over time, want the opportunity to specialize, or are heading to universities in the US or Canada, where the GPA system is well known.

How to choose between the IB and American diploma
Neither qualification is the ‘harder’ or ‘better’ one. They’re different. The right one for your child depends on how they learn and where they want to go next.
Our counselors get involved from Grade 10, meeting with students and families to discuss strengths, interests and university plans before any commitment is made.
Frequently asked questions
