When you are looking at IB schools in Doha, you will probably come across three acronyms: PYP, MYP, and DP. As only a small number of international schools in Doha provide the full IB programme, the following explanation will help to clarify each stage.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP)
From the very beginning of elementary school, our teachers pose questions rather than simply distributing worksheets. The students go through units of inquiry which involve a number of subjects; for instance, a unit on water would cover science, math, geography and writing. By using this method, we hope that children will learn how to find the answers themselves, not just memorise them.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP)
In middle school the MYP provides a more structured approach to learning. Students study eight subject groups and begin to link what they are taught to real-life situations. They also develop key habits needed for the diploma, such as meeting deadlines, carrying out their own research and honestly reflecting on their work.

The Diploma Programme (DP)
In the 11th and 12th grades students study six subjects together with the DP core, this core comprising Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The Diploma Programme is a demanding one and is recognised by universities all over the world for the standard of achievement it requires. For instance, the highest scorer in our Class of 2026 achieved 38 points.

Why the full continuum matters
Switching schools about halfway through generally means that you have to change educational frameworks. Students who have gone through the PYP and MYP already arrive at the DP with experience in inquiry, independent research and self-assessment and thus avoid the catch-up year.

IB Diploma or American Diploma?
It is entirely normal that the IB Diploma is not suitable for every student, and since ACS also awards the American High School Diploma, families are able to choose the right pathway in their 11th and 12th grades without having to switch schools. Students who like a wide curriculum and who enjoy writing as well as managing a number of major projects at the same time will find the IB Diploma to be appropriate. On the other hand, students who want more flexibility in choosing their subjects will go for the American Diploma. Our advisers help each family to carefully consider the various options before entering Grade 11, looking at your child’s strengths and their intended university courses.

See it for yourself
The information you get about an IB World School has its limits, so you should go around the campus, visit the classrooms in all three programmes and ask our team any questions you may have. Why not arrange your campus tour now?
